To Fight A War
By Tom Hunnicutt
1st Verse
I have a tale – will you listen to me?
It’s a story ‘bout a Young Marine,
who went to war, but he didn’t know why.
You see he served with me and he died in my arms one night.
Verses
(2) Now when I was a lad, sarge, my dad told me.
It’s wrong to kill, son, this you’ll see.
For the Bible says we must turn the other cheek,
but that all change sarge, when I turned eighteen.
(3) For the Hawks say war and the doves say peace;
While others turn their backs I see.
No where’s the right or where’s the wrong?
You see I don’t understand and I’m all mixed up inside.
(4) Then late one night in a fire fight,
this young lad laid down his life
to save his friends from a certain death.
He gave his life in a war he couldn’t understand.
(5) And far away a mother cries,
A father grieves for his only son.
Who went to war, but he didn’t know why,
Well he served with me and he died in my arms that night.
Chorus
Now we’re on our way, yes we’re on our way,
To fight a war – so they say.
Well I’m not afraid, sarge, but I don’t know why.
You see I don’t understand and I’m all mixed up inside.
No, I don’t understand and I’m all mixed up inside.
