Potomac River Song

(Captain T (Tom Hunnicutt))
Potomac River Song
By Tom Hunnicutt & George E. Beetham, Jr.

Intro- 1st Verse
High in the Appalachians, +a mountain is born,
It tumbles down the mountain side, cool and clear in the morn.
As it winds its way through the hollows, the trout jump in the sun.
Man makes his mark upon the stream – and the purity is gone:
the purity is gone

Chorus
Potomac River, you once were grand,
Now your water smells, and your clogged with sand,
Potomac River, you once were grand.
Now your water smells, ‘ cause the people just don’t to give a damn.

2nd Verse
The mines of West Virginia, spill their acids in the sun.
Rain washes them into the stream, and yellow it does run;
And yellow it does run.
As the river rolls down from the foothills and across the Piedmont Plain,
The soil plowed up by farmers is washed off in the rain;
Is washed off in the rain.

3rd Verse
The cities pump their seware, untreated out to sea.
It gives bacteria a breeding ground to sicken you and me:
To sicken you and me.
Folks picnic by the riverside, a barbecue with beer.
The cans float down the river, though trash can’s sitting near;
Though trash can’s are sitting near.

4th Verse
The river’s on a rampage now, the water’s rising high.
Mother Earth is teaching a lesson, but the truth just slips right by:
The truth slips right by.
This river once ran crystal clear; it’s now a polluted mess.
Only what we want it to be, is all it will be I guess;
This is all it will be I guess.
