For the Deserts so cold and the sand drifts for miles,

1st & 2nd Verses
I see fires in the distance, hear the rumble of guns,
As tanks and brave soldiers go by.
For battles loom in the darkness of night,
Oh, how I’m missing you tonight.
Today I did something I rather forget,
I took my first human life.
I wanted to pray, but that could not be,
‘cause you can’t pray when you’re in a fight.

I miss them young ones and I bet they have grown,
Billy and little Mary Lou.
I bet Billy can talk and Mary Lou can walk,
Won’t you tell them how much I miss them.
The captain told us this war won’t last long,
And that we should be going home soon.

Then weeks went by and no letters came,
Then Sally worst fears came true.
Came a knock on her door in the late afternoon,
And she knew that her soldier had died.
Now young sweet Sally stood by his grave,
As the bugler slowly played taps.
Tears from her eyes told of her grieve,
For her soldier had fought his last fight.

7th & 8th Verses
As the years passed by Sally grew old,
but her love for him never died.
For the letters he wrote to her long, long ago –
They still lingered in her mind.
